What is Emissions Cheating

The term "Emissions Cheating" refers to the illegal use of software or hardware—known as a "Prohibited Defeat Device" (PDD)—installed by car manufacturers to deceive regulatory emissions tests. This software is designed to detect the specific conditions of a laboratory test (like a steady speed on a rolling road) and temporarily engage the vehicle's full emissions control systems to reduce harmful pollutants, primarily Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), to compliant levels.

When the car is driven normally on the road, the defeat device switches off the full emissions control, prioritizing engine performance, fuel efficiency, and to avoid issues like needing larger tanks for the AdBlue additive. As a result, the cars emit NOx levels that are far higher than legal limits, in some cases up to 40 times higher than recorded during the test. The London High Court case (often called "Dieselgate 2") is a massive group action where consumers are suing manufacturers, arguing that the installation of these devices constitutes a breach of contract because the vehicles were not compliant with regulations as sold, misleading consumers and causing substantial environmental damage.
